Hearth & Meter covers the unglamorous side of owning or renting a home in the United States: the furnace that needs a tune-up, the water heater that is getting old, the attic that leaks heat, and the utility bill that keeps creeping up. We focus on two questions. What does it cost, and what is worth doing first?
Who this site is for
- Homeowners who want to plan repairs and upgrades before they become emergencies
- Renters who want lower utility bills and need to know what to ask a landlord
- First-time buyers learning what a house needs every season
How we research and write
- Public data first. We work from sources such as the U.S. Department of Energy, ENERGY STAR, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), the EPA, FEMA, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and we link to them.
- Ranges, not guesses. Costs vary by region, home size, and contractor. When we give a number, we say where it came from and what moves it up or down.
- Dates on everything. Energy prices, rebates, and codes change. Each article notes when its information was last checked, and we update it when things change.
- No fake hands-on claims. We do not pretend to have installed, tested, or inspected anything we have not. We describe what official guidance and published data say.
- AI-assisted, human-checked process. We use AI tools to help organize research and draft articles. Facts and numbers are checked against the sources before publishing.
Safety comes first
Gas lines, electrical panels, roofs, and anything involving combustion or refrigerant are jobs for licensed professionals. Our articles help you understand the work and ask better questions. They are not step-by-step instructions for hazardous repairs.
